Bio: Coming from the typical higher-class unicorns of Canterlot, Chalcedony was the typical nerd all through her youth. She preferred hiding out in her room with a bunch of history books than to do much outside. Reading all about Equestrian history made her curious what was before the written history, though. Was there
a time before even Celestia? What were early ponies like? Did magic always exist? Questions plagued her, and none of the books would give her the answers she needed; they were all limited to the author's discoveries. In order to find out, she'd have to make her own discoveries! This in itself didn't give her her cutie mark, however, that did not come until a couple of years later, when she traveled beyond the Everfree Forest and came upon several Zebra artifacts - mostly fetishes and ruins of more permanent settlements than the general modern zebra populations.
A trip quickly became a camp as she began figuring out what happened, first by observation of the site, then by studying one of the fetishes in greater detail. A week into her dig she had a flash of magical insight, a momentary vision into the past, one of the fetishes she had spent time studying suddenly setting off her affinity towards divination. There had been a river here at one time, the stones in the fetish had been fished from said river at some point. And instantly it became clear, the settlement had been built with the water keeping crops alive, though when the crops failed, the zebra had to return back to foraging for food rather than growing their own, no other territory within zebra land was suitable for sustained farming beyond a couple of scant, hard to raise crop. With this minor discovery, she found her purpose, and with it, her cutie mark. The presentation of her discovery catapulted her into an archaeological program within the Canterlot Academy, and after a year of study, she graduated and was hired by the Academy itself as an assistant professor.
